Project Background
Wangxian Valley, located in Shangrao, Jiangxi Province, has quickly emerged as one of China’s most distinctive cultural tourism destinations. Surrounded by mountains, streams, and traditional villages, the valley combines natural scenery with vernacular architecture. The design of its streets and squares needed paving that not only supported heavy visitor flow but also harmonized with the historic and poetic atmosphere of the valley.
OLD STONE’s Role
OLD STONE was invited to participate in the paving project, providing aged natural stone materials and on-site technical support. From material selection to construction adjustments, the goal was clear: to deliver paving that looks timeless, feels authentic, and withstands long-term use in a high-traffic cultural site.
Material & Craftsmanship
- Stone Selection: Locally inspired, natural aged stone with subtle weathering, ensuring visual continuity with old village walls and grey-tiled roofs.
- Paving Pattern: A combination of irregular layouts and controlled “staggered joints,” creating both order and natural charm.
- Construction Method: Gaps were carefully kept around 5mm. Engineers used hand-marked revision drawings during construction to ensure the paving aligned seamlessly with surrounding streetscapes.

The aged paving became an essential part of Wangxian Valley’s visitor experience:
- After rain, the stones reflect lantern light, evoking a cinematic atmosphere.
- In daylight, the grey tones resonate with earthen walls and traditional houses.
- At night, the stone-paved streets transform into photo spots, guiding tourists naturally through the valley.
